DESCRIPTION

We are looking for a Senior Optical Engineer to developing solutions that require significant innovation for the new Amazon Dash Cart and other confidential projects. Our team is based in the Boston MetroWest area. We are all currently working remotely due to COVID-19 until the end of June.

Amazon Dash cart allows shoppers to checkout without lines — you just place the items in the cart and the cart will take care of the rest. When you’re done shopping, you leave the store through a designated dash lane. We charge the payment method in your Amazon account as you walk through the dash lane and send you a receipt. Designed and custom-built by Amazonians, our Dash cart uses a variety of technologies including computer vision, sensor fusion, and advanced machine learning. As a Senior Optical Engineer within our team, you will engage with a skilled and accomplished cross-disciplinary staff to conceive and design innovative technologies. You will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to drive key aspects of technology solution definition, execution and validation. Some of the key job functions of the senior optical engineer include:

· Drive optical system definition and requirements, simulation, and component selection
· Design low-cost, high-volume, compact imaging systems, including illumination
· Perform lens design, stray light analysis and optomechanical tolerance analysis
· Perform comprehensive optical and image quality characterization
· Lead the development of proof of concepts of new technologies pertaining to novel embedded vision systems
· Take full responsibility of delivering optical technologies solutions for various products by working with various engineering disciplines

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

· Bachelor's degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, or related field
· 10+ years of industrial experience as an optical engineer
· Experience in complex optical system design, simulation, and integration
· Proficiency with ZEMAX, MATLAB, Code V, Fred, LightTools, or similar tools to model optical systems
· Hands-on experience with metrology and laboratory techniques for optical system instrumentation and characterization
· Ability to work effectively in fast-paced and diverse technical environment
· Ability to troubleshoot and perform root cause analysis methodologically
· Experience in engaging, working with, and managing vendors and suppliers
· Ability to travel internationally when required
· Excellent verbal and written communications skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

· Master's or Doctoral degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, or related field
· Ability to develop automated test with MATLAB, Python, and C++/C#
· Proven track record of hardware product development
· Experience working with international, cross-functional teams
