Intelon Optics is a rapidly-expanding world class technology and innovation company.

In this position you will be responsible for design and development of laser beam delivery components and subassemblies for a medical diagnostic Brillouin spectroscopy system. You will perform simulation, optimization, and detailed analysis of optical layouts in Zemax to bring current clinically-tested research systems to final marketed product design.  Working closely with a team multidisciplinary engineers as well as vendors, you will use your strong product development experience to conceptualize product configurations and robust opto-mechanical designs for highly sensitive and tightly toleranced instrumentation.  Your hands-on skills will be an asset in both creating design specifications, optical layouts, assembly procedures, and testing system performance.

In this fast-paced startup environment you will need excellent interpersonal skills, communication/documentation, and ability to collaboratively and responsively, focusing on key priorities based on new information and product development timeline. This role is based in our new state-of-the-art innovation center, located in Boston, MA.
 

Responsibilities

  • Work with internal teams to gather requirements and develop strategies with suppliers to manufacture and implement optical systems
  • Design, develop, analyze, and optimize optical systems using Zemax simulation software
  • Verify optical system performance with benchtop testing.
  • Maintain controlled documentation electronic and paper files under Quality System.
  • Design for manufacturability, metrology, mounting mechanics, thermal stability, tolerance analysis, stray light analysis
  • Collaborate in a multidisciplinary environment with other engineers and subject matter experts in the areas of optical engineering, mechanical engineering, optical and mechanical component fabrication, electronics design, micro-electronics assembly and opto-mechanical assembly. Managing interactions with internal / external partners and suppliers

Minimum Qualification

  • Advanced degree in Physics, Optics, or related technical field
  • 5+ years of experience in analytical optical design including hands on experience building and testing optical systems, free space and fiberoptic
  • 5+ years of experience in commercial design and manufacturing of optical components, subassemblies, and systems
  • Proven development experience translating optical designs into stable products
  • Experience designing tests for new optical systems. Testing and evaluating performance of new optical systems, then using results to optimize the design
  • Proficiency with analytical Zemax simulations

Preferred Additional Qualifications

  • Biomedical imaging and understanding of laser tissue interactions
  • Spectroscopy, interferometry, and camera imaging systems
  • Medical and ophthalmic device development
  • Strong optomechanical design experience and optical design for manufacturability preferred
  • Working knowledge of SolidWorks or equivalent mechanical design software
